Day 5 of The 4th Summer Course on Indonesia’s Tropical Landscape: Cultural Immersion in Pentingsari Village, Yogyakarta


Yogyakarta, February 9, 2026 – Participants of The 4th Summer Course on Indonesia’s Tropical Landscape, themed Cultural Landscape, continued their field-based learning activities on the fifth day by visiting Pentingsari Village, Yogyakarta, on Monday (9/2). The visit aimed to introduce participants to traditional rural life and the integration of culture, agriculture, and landscape in a local village setting.


During the visit, participants were guided to explore various aspects of village life in Pentingsari. They experienced traditional farming practices such as plowing rice fields using buffaloes and planting rice seedlings, providing direct insight into local agricultural culture. In addition, participants took part in traditional arts and crafts activities, including playing gamelan instruments, learning batik making using canting tools, and practicing traditional dances.


The program also introduced participants to local community-based industries. They observed the mushroom cultivation and processing into crispy mushroom snacks, learned about traditional coffee production, and participated in the preparation of herbal drinks made from local ingredients. These activities highlighted the role of natural resources and traditional knowledge in supporting village livelihoods.
According to the organizers, the visit to Pentingsari Village represents an important component of the summer course program, as it allows participants to understand the concept of cultural landscape through direct interaction with the community and its environment. The activities demonstrated how local traditions, agricultural practices, and small-scale industries shape and sustain the rural landscape.


In addition to the learning sessions, participants stayed in local homestays that reflected the traditional architectural style and hospitality of Yogyakarta. The homestay experience provided participants with an opportunity to engage closely with village residents and experience daily life in a warm and authentic local atmosphere.


The field visit to Pentingsari Village is part of the ten-day series of activities of The 4th Summer Course on Indonesia’s Tropical Landscape, which is designed to strengthen participants’ academic and practical understanding of Indonesia’s tropical landscapes and the application of the cultural landscape concept in sustainable environmental and community-based development.
