Participants of The 4th Summer Course on Indonesia’s Tropical Landscape Visit Bogor Botanical Gardens

Bogor, February 7, 2026 – Participants of The 4th Summer Course on Indonesia’s Tropical Landscape, themed Cultural Landscape, conducted a field visit to Bogor Botanical Gardens on Saturday (7/2) as part of the third day of the ten-day academic program.
The visit aimed to enhance participants’ understanding of tropical biodiversity and the role of cultural landscapes in conservation and landscape management. The activity was guided by Dr. Nizar Nasrullah and Dr. Rosyi Damayanti, who provided on-site explanations regarding various plant collections and landscape features within the gardens.

During the visit, participants explored several thematic areas and learned about a wide range of tropical plant species, including rare and iconic plants such as Amorphophallus titanum (corpse flower) and other endemic flora of Indonesia. The guides also introduced the historical and ecological significance of Bogor Botanical Gardens as one of the oldest botanical gardens in Southeast Asia.
Dr. Nizar Nasrullah explained that Bogor Botanical Gardens serves as a living laboratory for tropical landscape studies. “Through this field visit, participants are able to observe directly the relationship between biodiversity, cultural values, and landscape management,” he stated.

Dr. Rosyi Damayanti added that the field activity supports contextual learning by connecting theoretical knowledge with real-world landscape practices. Participants were encouraged to observe how conservation, education, and tourism functions are integrated within a cultural landscape setting.
The participants showed strong enthusiasm throughout the exploration, particularly when studying rare plant collections and the management system of the botanical garden as a center for plant conservation and public education.

This field visit is part of the series of activities of The 4th Summer Course on Indonesia’s Tropical Landscape, a ten-day program designed to strengthen participants’ academic insight into Indonesia’s tropical landscapes and the application of the cultural landscape concept in sustainable environmental planning and management.
